Laundry (10) in the washing machine is illuminated by light with alternating wavelengths in a generally monochrome spectrum section, and the strength of the reflected light measured. The color of the laundry (10) is determined from at least two different light wavelengths and the measured reflected light strengths. The washing machine has at least two light emitting diodes (3-6) with separate control, to project monochrome light at different wavelengths, and at least one photo receiver (1) for the reflected light. A control (8) operates the lamps (3-6) and evaluates the signals of at least one photo receiver (1).
