The identification system uses a machine-readable transponder (5) attached to each electronic component tray (1) which provides a characteristic identification signal. The transponder can be embedded in the edge of the tray. The tray may be made of plastics and is rectangular with a number of adjacent rows of compartments (2) for housing the electronic components (3), the transponder incorporated along one of its longitudinal edges.
