Error correction codes interleaved in the data direction on a disc are grouped into a block as a unit of error correction, and data is recorded/reproduced in a disc format where the order of input/output of user data in the error correction unit, i.e., in an ECC block, is made to coincide with the error correction code processing direction. Coding can be started upon the arrival of data required to generate one code without waiting the arrival of all data for one ECC block, and the user data can be sent out upon finishing error correction of one code without waiting for the end of error correction of one ECC block. Since the direction of correction code is the same as that of the user data, no memory is required to rearrange the data and the scale of the hardware configuration can be small. Furthermore, the traffic of data between a buffer memory and the outside is light and arbitration of bus is easy.
