Satellite signals (L1,L2) are correlated against known code P. The resultant signals are integrated over a period estimated equal to that of a single bit of the unknown code W, to obtain two further which are cross correlated. A degree of confidence whether the first or second signal corresponds to code W is determined depending whether the result of the cross correlation exceeds a positive or negative threshold.
