The covering comprises a transparent, hardened substrate. A layer of solid colored particles (19) is distributed in a further layer of the same material. An Independent claim is included for the corresponding method of making the covering. PREFERRED FEATURES:- The base is viscous or a material which can be cast. There are two layers. The base layer is a mixture of transparent epoxy resin and/or polyurethane with pearlescent pigments (18). The covering layer (14) is a mix of plastics and solid, colored particles, e.g. glass, lead crystal (glass) particles and/or transparent or opaque, artificial gemstones. Glass particles are treated with silanes. The visible surface of the layer (16) is ground and polished. A layer of electrically conductive particles is included, e.g. pearlescent particles in the covering layer. In the process of manufacture, the visible surface is smoothed using an electrolytically bonded, 60-800 grit diamond disc. Remaining pits (21) are filled with plastics resin and re-ground.
