PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a lubricant additive which is excellent in capability for dispersing black sludge by selecting, as the additive, a compsn. which contains specified amts. of a liq. org. diluent and a substd. hydrocarbaryl metal salt, at least specified proportion of the metal salt being a lithium salt, is nonthixotropic, has a basicity lower than a specified value, and does not contain Na. SOLUTION: This lubricant additive contains 10-50 wt.% inert diluent having a viscosity (Saybolt Universal second, at 380 deg.C) of 35-500 and 30-90 wt.% substd. hydrocarbaryl metal salt, is nonthixotropic, has a basicity lower than 150, and does not contain Na. At least 30 wt.% of metals in the substd. hydrocarbaryl metal salt is Li, and a part of the metals my be metals of the group II (e.g. Ca). The substd. hydrocarbaryl metal salt is such a compd. as a phenate, sulfurized phenate, arom. phenate, arom. sulfonate, salicylate, sulfurized salicylate, or polyhydroxyarom. compd. salt substd. by a 6-40C alkyl or alkenyl group. |
