The probe (2) uses an air or ferrite-filled winding to detect the magnetic field of the line with a measuring circuit (4) using a cascade-connected operational amplifier to provide an output voltage proportional to field intensity with a high signal to noise ratio. The inductance and resistance of the winding are selected to match the power frequency.
