Scaling is avoided by a process (P) that modifies the composition of the cooling water to reduce the difference between the concentration of calcium ions determined from characteristic curves (C) relating the scaling to composition of the water leaving the tower and to the composition when the water in equilibrium with atmospheric carbon dioxide.
