PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new isolated polynucleotide having a high identity with a nucleic acid encoding a response regulator polypeptide containing a specific amino acid sequence, useful for treating and diagnosing infectious diseases with Streptococcus pneumoniae. SOLUTION: This new isolated polynucleotide comprises a polynucleotide having at least 70% identity with a polynucleotide encoding a polypeptide containing an amino acid sequence of the formula, a polynucleotide having at least 70% identity with a polynucleotide encoding the same mature polypeptide as that expressed by a response regulator gene contained in Streptococcus pneumoniae of a deposited strain and is useful for preventing infection with bacteria and treating and diagnosing diseases. The polynucleotide is obtained by probing a chromosome DNA library of Streptococcus pneumoniae 0100993 by a labeled oligonucleotide derived from a partial sequence.
