The positioning device, for a sliding piston (10) within a pneumatic or hydraulic cylinder (11), uses a sensor (23) detecting the actual piston position, coupled to an electronic regulator (19), for control of a proportional valve (15) providing regulated piston braking. The position regulation is corrected for the piston velocity and/or acceleration, the regulator having a learning mode in which the detected piston end positions, defined by stops, are detected and stored.
