PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetoresistive sensor wherein, even when a gap distance between a magnetoresistive element and a magnetic scale becomes smaller compared with a specified gap distance, an output waveform does not distract while a high output relative to changes in gap distance is stably obtained. SOLUTION: An artificial lattice film 26 is used as a magnetoresistive element provided, while facing, to a magnetic scale 25, and the artificial lattice film 26 is so provided that the center line in longitudinal direction of it agrees with the array direction of the magnetic scale 25. Further, the pattern of the artificial lattice film 26 is,λ/4×0.8<d<λ/4×1.0 (where,λis distance from N-pole to adjoining N-pole, d is width in array direction of N-pole and S-pole of magnetic scale of magnetic sensitive pattern of artificial lattice film (magnetic sensitive pattern is a magnetic-field-sensitive part, machined to almost a rectangular pattern shape, of artificial lattice film which magnetic reluctance element)).
