A warning light has a plurality of light emitting diodes which are driven with a pulsed overdriving signal to produce a higher than normal intensity light output. The warning light may be an anti-collision warning light for external use on aircraft. A drive circuit (30, Figs.2,4) may produce rectangular pulses with a duty cycle of not more than 10%. A flash pattern box may be connected to the drive circuit to cause the light to flash. A sealed enclosure with a transparent or translucent cover 26 may house multiple arrays 14 of LEDs arranged around an axis 12 so to cover a 360 degrees illumination range. Each array 14 may have parallel connected strings of series connected LEDs, and visible red light emitting strings may alternate with white light emitting strings, there being means to select the desired colour. Infra-red emitting LED arrays 20 may also be provided. The light may alternatively be used for aircraft directional guidance systems or for marking hazards, such as television transmitter towers or harbour walls, or for emergency personnel and property identification. |
