A spark (13) travels from the high tension electrode (62) to the surface (2'') of the inter-electrode insulation (15). A partially conducting layer (2') located under the surface of the insulation (15) and connected to the low tension electrode causes the lines of equi-potential (21-26) to be compressed at the insulation (15) surface at the spark end and thus to continue to propagate it (17).
