A plate (20) for carrying a seal (14) for a valve housing or fitting (F) which plate comprises a means for co-operating with a biasing device, such as a spring (10), in order to press the seal (14) against a seating (16) having an aperture or through-bore (A), wherein the plate comprises means such as a radially protruding lug which inhibits accidental removal of the plate from the fitting. The plate is substantially annular and substantially of a diameter sufficient to pass through the aperture (A) whereas the lug provides the plate with a greater diameter thus requiring controlled manipulation to pass the plate into fitting (F) but preventing accidental removal.
