The seal assembly (4) between cell frames and separator has a first flat component (5) and a second compressible, compliant component (6) of greater thickness. The first is a spacer; the second a seal. Both are enclosed in a common outer casing (7). An Independent claim is included for use of the seal in an electrolytic cell, and the method of use. Preferred features: The first component has a lattice- or grid form. It is rectangular and nonconductive, preferably a plastic. This plastic is polypropylene or an elastomer. The second component (6) comprises expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) or ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM). It form is cord-like and comprises a spirally-rolled sheet material. The rolled material is an O-ring or a cord with sealed locations. The seal density gradient increases radially inwards. The covering (7) is a plastic sheet, especially ePTFE. The second component extends along the outer edge of the first. The ePTFE contains a filler comprising glass, ceramic or polymer resin.
