<p>Pieces of foam having a negative Poisson's ratio and volumes on the order of thousands of cubic centimeters may be prepared by assembling a mold (10) having wall members (12, 14, 16, 18 and 20) about a piece of foam, e.g. standard open-cell polyurethane foam, in such a manner that the foam is compressed in all three dimensions. While it is compressed, the foam is heated to a plastic or semi-plastic state and then cooled, thereby causing the foam cells to assume re-entrant configurations.</p> |
