The foodstuff, e.g. a filled bread roll (9) , is enclosed is an airtight package (10) and then surrounded with a cylindrical cardboard holder (11). The holder has rounded edges (12), which give the package the same shape as a soft drink can. The free space in the package can be taken up by a sac of preserving gas (13). After manufacture and packing, the product can be transported, handled and dispensed in exactly the same way as cans of soft drink.
