PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for determining an optimal character size easily for character forming regions of various sizes without increasing a character size table. SOLUTION: A method for determining the character size of a character string having n (n>=1) characters suitable for a character forming region from a plurality of character sizes comprises a step (S31) for acquiring the number of dots L in the character forming region, a step (S32) for calculating the upper limit of character size D=L/(ΣQ/P), where P is the number of reference dots of an arbitrary character size among a plurality of character sizes and Qi (i=1-n, ΣQ is the total sum of Qi) is the number of dots of each character when the character string is composed of an arbitrary character size, and a step (S33) for determining the maximum character size having a number of dots smaller than the upper limit D on a character size table defining a plurality of character sizes as the character size of the character string.
