PRINS REACTION PRODUCTS OF 5,7-DIMETHYL-OCT-6-EN-2-ONE AND THEIR USE AS FRAGRANCE MATERIALS

Products of a Prins reaction on isoelgenone exhibit a strong odour of cooked or stewed plum and so find use in perfumes and in perfumed products. Novel compounds responsible for the plum odour include 5-(4-methyl-3,6-dihydro-2H-5-pyranyl)-2 hexanone and 5-(4,4-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolan-5-yl)-2-hexanone (1).
