A welding device (10) having a linear drive arrangement for providing a continuous welding electrode (20) having a welding flux coating (21) coated on its surface. A plurality of gaps (22) are formed in the electrode (20) to expose the metal core (23) within the gaps (22). The electrode (20) is driven through the device by the linear movement of a plurality of contact carriers circulated between an advance channel (17) and a return channel (18). A pivotable arm (55) is mounted in the body of the device, which has a lower portion extending in the rear portion of the advance channel (17). The pivotable arm (55) is operative to push a rear contact carrier in the advance channel (17) to engage with a drive wheel (36) for moving the contact carriers forwards. A rocker arm (51) is mounted at the underside of the body of the device and is pivotable by a rod (53) mounted in an off center manner on a rotary disc (51) for transferring simultaneously a contact carrier (24) from the advance channel (17) to the return channel (18) and a contact carrier from the return channel (18) to the advance channel (17).
