Novel organosilicon compound, used as liquid crystalline dielectric for electro-optical display elements

A novel organosilicon compound is useful as a liquid crystal dielectric or for the formation of homotropically oriented layers. An organosilicon compound (I) is of formula R<1>(A<1>)mZ<1>A<2>(Z<2>A<3>)nWSiXaYbZc (1). Independent claims are included for: (i) a process for the production of (I) by mixing an unsaturated compound of formula R<1>(A<1>)mZ<1>A<2>(Z<2>A<3>)nWCH=CH2 (2) with a silane of formula HSiXaYbZc (3) or by mixing a halogen compound of formula R<1>(A<1>)mZ<1>A<2>(Z<2>A<3>)nWHal (4) with a silane of formula (3) or by mixing a halosilane of formula (1) (where at least one of X, Y, Z = Cl, Br and/or I with a hydroxy group containing compound; (ii) a liquid crystal dielectric for electro-optic display elements (II) having at least two liquid crystal components at least one of which is an organosilicon compound (I); and (iii) the electro-optical display element (II) containing (I) or having surfaces that have been treated with (I). R<1> = chiral or achiral 1-10C alkyl whereby one or two non-neighbouring CH2 groups are optionally replaced by -O-, F, Cl, halogenated 1-3C alkyl, alkoxy, alkenyl or alkenyloxy; A<1>, A<2>, A<3> = 1,4 cyclohexene, optionally having one or two non-neighbouring CH2 groups replaced by -O- and/or -S- and optionally substituted with 1-2F or is 1,4-phenylene, optionally having at least one CH group replaced by N and optionally substituted with 1-2F; Z<1>, Z<2> = -CH2CH2-, -CO-O-, -(C2H4)-, -(CH2)4-, -CH2CH=CHCH2-, -CH2O-, -O-CH2-, -CH=CH-, -C equivalent to C- or a single bond; m = 0 or 1; n = 0, 1 or 2; m+n = at least 1; W = 2-10C alkylene, optionally having one or two non-neighbouring CH2 group replaced by -CHF- and/or -CH(CF3)-; X, Y, Z = OCN, CN, R', OR' H or Cl whereby at least one of X, Y or Z is different; R' = 1-15C alkyl, optionally having one or more non-neighbouring CH2 groups replaced by -O-, -CO-, and/or -CH=CH-; a, b, c = 0-3; a+b+c = 3.
