A process is disclosed for controlling a metallurgical plant for producing steel or aluminium, in particular a rolling mill. Steel or aluminium with particular material properties which depend on the steel or aluminium structure are produced in the metallurgical plant from starting materials. The material properties of the steel or aluminium are dependent on operating parameters of the plant which are determined by a structure optimiser depending on the desired steel or aluminium material properties.
