A carriage (20) is provided for work piece holders (12), positioned above and movable forwards and backwards. In a forward position a work piece holder is loaded (18) on a first mount and at a workstation (22), the work piece holder is placed on a second mount by a lifting device. The work piece is then passed to a discharge station (26) and removed by an unloading device (28). A conveyor (14) returns the holder to the charging station.
