A method of designing a golf club rear face comprises assigning a thickness to each area of the face according to a magnitude of internal stress expected to be experienced by each area when a force due to striking of a ball by a club front face is experienced and assigning a greater thickness in areas where the stress is greater and lesser thickness where the stress is lesser. In a typical outcome the thicker portions of the face are in an inverted T-form. The method is applicable to both iron-type and wood-type clubs. |
