The press-bar (261), mounted in the press-head (26), contacts the sheet (2), which is fixed on top of the anvil-plate (262), along a narrow flat transverse surface (265). After each press impulse, the press-head is raised and the anvil-plate, and sheet, are moved, on an axis at right angles to the bar, by a motor-driven screwed rod (263) operating in a nut fixed to the anvil, which slides on a guiding surface (210) in the press. The press-head has a constant travel determined by stops at either side, the convergence imposed on the opposite sides of the sheet resulting from the angle of inclination (B) of the anvil top w.r.t. the axis of motion. The step-by-step reduction in thickness begins at maximum value at one edge of the sheet, and gradually decreases as the sheet travels under the press-head. The reduction achieved is monitored, and parameters are adjusted to obtain the desired result. More than one pass may be required; opt., the sheet is treated successively in two differently set presses. A variant also described presses the sheet between two press-bars, the sheet being displaced by a draw-clamp holding the leading edge.
|
