PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a system for controlling a vehicle capable of minimizing the fuel consumption rate in the operation condition of the vehicle for every moment. SOLUTION: A control unit 100 to control an engine 10 of a vehicle and an automatic transmission 20, is provided with a target drive torque setting part 120 to set the target drive torque Td which is the target torque of a drive wheel from the accelerator step-in angle θac and a vehicle speed (v), and a target value setting part 140 to set the target air-fuel ratio tA/F to minimize the fuel consumption rate and the target transmission gear ratio tNin under the prescribed condition to realize the operation of the engine 10 and the transmission 20 while satisfying the target drive torque Td set by the target drive torque setting part to the present vehicle speed. A hydraulic circuit 28 of the transmission 20 is controlled by the target transmission gear ratio tNin and the engine 10 is controlled so as to realize the target air-fuel ratio tA/F.
