Direct process for producing tars containing organometallic compounds for spinning in the form of carbon fibres and tar. An improved process for obtaining an anisotropic tar product which contains metals suitable for the manufacture of carbon fibres is described. Soluble aromatic organometallic compounds are added to the substantially mesophase tar-free carbonaceous feed material and heat is diffused into the resulting composition, preferably by bubbling gas, in order to produce a mesophase tar containing metals.
