The screen (6), inclined to the vertical, is placed across the mouth of the intake (7) through which water is being drawn (B) from e.g. a reservoir (1). Compressed air is supplied (A) from a nearby compressor-house to a set of parallel terminal pipes (3') attached to the screen's downstream face, each pipe having several outlet nozzles (4), submerged at different levels. A control unit (5) connects the air supply when the accumulation of debris, leaves, branches, etc. on the screen is sufficient to raise the pressure differential across the screen, as measured by upstream (5') and downstream (5'') sensors, above a preset figure. The air flow dislodges the trash and carries it to the surface for removal
