An automatic gear drive has a belt and cone system with the spacing of the conical flanges adjusted via two hydraulic pressure chambers (36,44) connected to a hydraulic controller (26). The separate hydraulic chambers are fitted with return flow apertures controlled by sliders. The system provides for a wide range of control without requiring large hydraulic pressures. The hydraulic control unit contains electric control valves.
