The method involves passing a useful data stream via an optical communications channel. This is done as a phase modulated laser light wave containing synchronisation bits. At regular intervals in the continuous sequence of synchronization bits (20) inserted into the useful data stream (17), the phase of the light used for the transmission adopts a value different from the desired phase value. The different phase value is interpreted as a synchronization bit infringement (11).
