Method of electrically actuating motor vehicle brakes using brake-by-wire

The method involves measuring the individual wheel speeds with a wheel controller computing the wheel slip and acceleration for each wheel. Each actual value for brake pressure is stored if a defined first wheel slip and/or acceleration threshold is exceeded. The quotient of the stored actual value and a characteristic pressure value is used to estimate the frictional coefficient. Anti-lock control of the brake pressure is exerted using the estimated coefficient according to a defined algorithm. The estimated coefficient is cleared if the value falls below a second wheel slip and/or acceleration threshold and the current coefficient is increased to a dry road value.
