The invention relates to a holding device for machine tool inserts (19) comprising a recess (21) which is delimited by clamping jaws (23) and (25). Said recess serves as a clamping seat for the insert (19). The holding device also comprises a slot (27) which extends the recess (21) and which has a receptacle for a spreading body (7) of a spreader key. The slot (27) has a half-circular expansion (33) on one of both edges (31) thereof which serves as a receptacle for the spreading body (7). The cross section of the spreading body (7) of the spreader key is a polygon outline (9) in the shape of an isosceles triangle whose corners are each rounded with an equal curve radius.
