The invention provides a protective midsole for molding into the outsole of a sa fety boot or shoe, which midsole conforms to the contours of the boot's outsole. The midso le includes an instep protective zone that extends laterally of the arch zone thereof and wh ich will protect the wearer from injury due to penetration of sharp objects in the instep area of the boot. In order to accommodate the somewhat wider midsole in the instep area the outsole o f the boot must also be increased in width.
