A reactor (10) for thermal processing of viscous materials, esp.thermoplastic elastomers comprises a heated cylinder and/or conical treatment surface (53) and a rotor (15) with conveying elements (7) moving material towards an outlet (22). Shear edges (78) on the rotor (15) are further from the treatment surface (53) than the outer edges of the conveying elements (76).A claimed variation has a rotor comprising two coaxial parts, the outer of which conveys material through an outer chamber from the reactor base to a diverting area and an inner conveys material downwards in an inner chamber from the diverting area to the outlet. A further variation of this type of reactor has shear edges on the rotors further from the treatment surface than the outer edge of the conveying elements.A use for the reactor is claimed in the processing of viscous materials, esp. precondensates of plastics produced by polycondensation
