Preparation of a concentrate of proanthocyanidine oligomers (I) by fermenting an extract of the bark of Schinopsis lorenzii, and the use of (I) in cosmetic, pharmaceutical, agroalimentary, dietetic and chemical compositions. The extract of Schinopsis lorenzii (red quebracho, fam. Anacardiaceae) is widely used in the tanning industry and is commercially available. It may be obtained by any extraction process from the bark of the tree. This is fermented using a strain of the fungus Aspergillus niger, which process concentrates the extract into proanthocyanidine oligomers by eliminating other components, especially sugars and organic acids. It further polymerizes the monomers and dimers and de-condenses catechins. The final product (I) contains a minimum of 95% proanthocyanidine oligomers. This may be dried by spraying, evaporation, or lyophilization or used in liquid form, either encapsulated or emulsified, or absorbed onto a solid. Formulated compositions may be administered by any route. Solid formulations preferably contain 0.01 - 15% (I), especially 0.1 - 2.5%, while capsules preferably contain 0.01 - 25% (I), especially 0.5 - 10%. |
