The patterns from a computer aided design system are taken from a computer store by selection from the operative at the working surface. The contours of the selected patterns are displayed by a laser beam on at least one suitable zone and in the required size on to the working surface. Specific contours of parts of selected patterns are interlocked by the operative on the material and, when they have been positioned for max. use of the material, a command is passed to the cutter for cutting to the original size and the cutter is activated by an operator's control. All the stages are effected by the operative, and the material is not moved until after the cutting action.
