The pyrotechnic charge (60) inflates the airbag. It has a first predetermined speed of combustion at a point along the length of the chamber (50), and a second different predetermined speed of combustion at a second point at some distance from the first point. The housing of the inflation device has a tubular configuration. It includes an axially extending side wall and has an inner face in contact with the whole outer side of the pyrotechnic charge.
