Preparing porous polyolefin particles comprises forming a solution of a crystallisable polyolefin, dispersing this in a non-solvent in the presence of a surfactant at above the crystallisation temperature to give a multi-phase system and cooling at 0.05-10 deg C per minute with stirring to below the crystallisation temperature to give firm particles. These are then separated and dried. Also claimed are particles formed having a porosity of 5-85%, an effective loadability, E1a /- 95%, where E1a = 100 /* [(ma/~ra)/(ma/~ra + mpo/~rpo)] / porosity (I). In (I), m = the weight of the polyolefin (po) and absorption agent (a) and ~r their respective densities. The absorption time /- 10 minutes and the degree of dispersion of the particle size 0.4.
