A split mold for aluminothermic welding of rails has an enlarged riser section (6) in the region of the rail foot (F). The split mold also has: (a) a constricted riser section (7) in the engagement region of a fettling tool; (b) a riser (5) which also acts as the sprue; and (c) mold halves (1, 3), each with an indentation (13) in transverse external sides (12) in the region above the mold cavity (4) portion accommodating the rail head (K).
