A reclining chair (10) in which a back section (20) does not extend further rearwardly between a seating position and a reclined position comprising a chassis (11), a seat section (60), a back section (20), a means for supporting the seat and back sections (60, 20) on the chassis (11) and a seat activator (30) for moving the chassis (11), the seat section (60) and the back section (20) relative to one another into either a reclining position or a seating position. The seat section (60) moves forward into the reclining position thereby allowing the free end of the back section (20) to move substantially vertically. A movable footrest (70) also may be provided. The chassis (11) may be fitted with an actuator (87) for lifting and lowering the chassis (11) to assist in mounting and dismounting the chair (10).
