A vehicle headlamp has a compact external styling with an aperture (34) which is smaller than the reflector and thereby fits into the vehicle styling. The central parts (16) of the reflector provide a central beam (20) of parallel rays. The sides (24) of the reflector are shaped to provide lateral beams (28) to add to the general beam effect, with the outer edges of the reflector reflecting the light further into the edges of the beam. The overall beam has a cutoff in the vertical direction. The outer aperture of the headlamp can be oval.
