PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound good in smell stability and useful as a substrate for fabric softeners, hair conditioners and the like by reacting a specific tertiary amine with a quaternizing agent in the presence of an antioxidizing agent or the like. SOLUTION: A tertiary amine of formula I A, B are each a 1-6C alkyl, a hydroxyalkyl or the like; D is a group of the formula: Cx H2x NHCOR<1> [R<1> is a 1-35C alkyl or an alkenyl; (x) is 2-6], a group of the formula: Cy H2y O-(YO)z - COR<1> [(y) is 2-6; Y is a 2-3C alkylene; (z) is 0-20]} (e.g. a compound of formula II) is reacted with a quaternizing agent preferably at 60-80 deg.C in the presence of an antioxidizing agent, a chelating agent or a quinone compound in an amount of 50-2,000 ppm based on the compound of formula I or III during or after the quaternization reaction to obtain the objective compound of formula III (E is a 1-4C alkyl or a hydroxyalkyl; X is an anion) (e.g. a compound of formula IV). |
