<p>The invention provides metal-containing compositions for resistors and thermistor elements. The compositions comprise at least one low melting point and optionally a higher melting point metal material and binder and exhibit a wide range of resistivity and temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) values. Compositions with low TCR values are useful for resistor applications while compositions with large TCR values are useful for thermistor applications. Resistor or thermistor elements can be produced by applying compositions onto suitable substrates and alloying (curing and/or sintering) the compositions. During curing/sintering, the metal or metal alloy powders undergo transient liquid phase sintering to form a continuous metallurgical network which allows for electrical conduction of the resulting element. Resistance and TCR values are dependent on the intermetallic compounds formed as a result of the alloying/sintering process. Resulting resistors and thermistor elements are stable up to about 250 degrees centigrade and can be used in the range of about - 50 up to about 200 degrees centigrade. The metal-containing compositions are compatible with polymer, metal and other substrates.</p> |
