A dispersion shift optical fiber having a structure for reducing an optical loss and limiting the development of a non-linear phenomenon, and having an effective area of at least 70 mu m<2> for light having a center wavelength within the range of 1,500 to 1,600 nm and a peak position at which optical power of the base mode of light attains the maximum is deviated by a predetermined distance in a radial direction from the center of a core area. In this dispersion shift optical fiber, optical power at the position spaced apart by five times the center wavelength of light in the radial direction from the peak position is not greater than 1/100 of optical power at the peak position. This construction can effectively reduce a bending loss.
