A surface treatment device comprising a disc of material 10 carrying an abrasive 12 and a mounting member 14 used to attach the device to a tool for subsequent use, is made by welding the mounting member 14 to the rear face of the disc 10 using high frequency energy, for example by means of ultrasonic welding preferably at a frequency in excess of 10 kHz. The mounting member 14 may be made of nylon and the disc 10 may be made of woven or non-woven materials, nylon scrim or polyester backed abrasive cloth. Pressure may be applied to the mounting member 14 and disc 10 before, during and after the welding process. Preferably raised areas are provided on one or both of the abutting surfaces of the mounting member 14 and the disc 10. |
