The magnetic read head has a thin magnetic layer (102) edge on to the magnetic recording surface and enlarging to a thicker layer (103) inside the read head. This enlarged strip has magnetoresistive strips (104a,104b) on either side to provide detection of the magnetic signal from the recorded surface. The surface of the reader is coated with a protective surface (106), with a break in the surface to allow the magnetic layer to come to the surface of the read head.
