Fibers (30) emerging from a spinner or bushing (10) during their manufacture are directed through an atmosphere which includes a non-liquid sizing material to form a lubricious coating thereon. The coating is derived from hydrocarbon radicals or organic or carbonaceous particulates generated by the burning of natural gas or other hydrocarbon fuel in an oxygen deficient atmosphere below the spinner or bushing. The emerging fibers (30) pass through the gaseous atmosphere and are coated by the radicals or particulates therein before their surfaces are reacted with water or other materials.
