The uni-or bi-directional ring network has a number of stations (1-4), coupled to respective network interfaces (5-8), each having a transmission and reception ring connection. The connections are established and the information is exchanged via ATM cells having a header containing a virtual path identifier and virtual channel identifier. At least one of the network interfaces (5) incorporates a conversion circuit for reversible conversion of the data bytes in the header of the ATM cells into a network specific identification.
