The device has a driven plate (9) and a pressure plate (6) on which the clutch disc pads (7,8) are fastened. A signal pickup (12) that is sensitive to magnetic fields communicates with the clutch housing and a magnetic signal transmitter (13,15) communicates at least partly with the pressure plate. The magnetic signal transmitter has at least two magnetic field-forming elements which generate or change a magnetic field. At least one of the elements communicates with the pressure plate. At least one second element communicates with the clutch housing. The spatial position of the elements determines the direction and magnitude of the magnetic signal. The pickup is a pickup responding to this signal and is located relative to the transmitter so that it determines only the radial component of magnetic field.
