A system (20) ensures efficient thermal protection for the rectal wall from a thermal treatment probe (10) applied to a nearby organ, especially the prostate gland. The surface (11) of the probe (10), and consequently of the rectum is maintained at a set temperature. The system (20) comprises a cooling circuit (23 - 25) fed with a coolant fluid such as water at an appropriate rate to maintain the temperature of the rectal wall at or close to normal temperature. The inner wall (12) of the probe surrounds a cavity (13) for inserting a detection instrument for the organ being treated, such as an echographic and especially an ultrasonic probe.
